cowboy bepop is a good one, though obnoxious at times and doesnt follow a concrete storyline - more to watch as a background show

    -The Wind Rises
Couldn't help but mention The Wind Rises on your list because it is by far the most heartfelt, thoughtful, and evocative movies (anime or non-anime) I have ever watched. Loosely based off an obscure memoir by Jiro Horikoshi and a novel that came out later under the same name as the movie, it is a biopic of the designer of the Mitsubishi Reppu, or even more famous "Reisen/Zero" fighter jet of Japan during WWII. It's the story of a man who was pitted against his passions in aviation and a government who desired blood and war. Although I would recommend reading these two novels first, the movie is one of Miyazaki's best films and is probably my favorite anime movie of all time.
