really cause i heard norton makes your computer slow D:

Up until these year i would agree with you but the new Norton programs run pretty light. I had stopped using them for that exact reason then i think they realized that their program was a resource hog and they were losing customers.

Free:

Microsoft Security Essentials

Paid:

Norton Internet Security or 360 (anything 2011 onward).

Updated to make the list neater and removed/added/updated links that were irrelevant now.

Post suggestions for any software you think is good.

The OP is most likely very outdated, but since this topic is back, I'll mention something that I install on all my Windows machines.

A free and really useful software I use is PowerToys.

It's made by Microsoft itself, and it's basically an extension to make Windows a bit more advanced.

It has many different little tools in it, some of which are:

  • FancyZones - Great tool to divide your monitors into multiple parts, really useful with big monitors.
  • Keyboard remapping - Don't find a specific key useful? Remap it to something else!
  • File Explorer Addon - A preview panel to see your files (like images or text files) without having to open the file(s)
  • Mouse Without Borders - Using multiple PCs with their own monitors? Use your 1 mouse and keyboard for all PCs, as if they are just one PC with multiple monitors.
  • Text Extractor - Have an image with text? You can now retrieve the text from it.
  • Many more!

You can find their GitHub project page here: https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys
Recommended download links through GitHub: https://aka.ms/installPowerToys

Or alternatively, you can get it through the Microsoft Store: https://aka.ms/getPowertoys
