  2. IDE of choice and why

Jet Brains products are good, I've used them frequently throughout my career. I still miss the debugger, even really bad IDE's are preferable to plain GBD. Only stopped using them when the company I worked for cheaped out on the desktops, causing laggy input so I switched to NVim & Terminator (Terminal Emulator). Biggest selling point for me was the ability to split windows, and switch between them (& tabs) quickly.
  3. OnePlus products

This is the last post I am going to make in this thread as, sadly, my phone (OnePlus One) has become unpractical to use anymore. It has been 5 years and around 3 months since I got the phone brand new. With the above in mind, it has held up beautifully. It is still fully functional, though the years have taken a toll on the battery, body and peripherals of the device: The 3.5mm jack has become _weird_ in the sense that the audio jack keeps popping out of it even after very small tugs The battery lasts only 2 hours of _actual_ use, thus for more busy days it is not able to get through even half of it. Keep in mind this is with an Android Pico installation, no Google services, no Facebook (bar Messenger Lite) and practically no use of the GNSS functionality The USB jack has seen some better days and whilst you would still have to tug on the power connection quite firmly, it is now easier to get it out (especially accidentally) than it used to be The body itself has seen better days, it would be hard to pass it off as 'good enough' anymore. Though it does not impact overall usability The camera is practically useless. I swear it used to be much better when I got it, though either due to some software mishap of hardware fault, it takes a very long time to take any kind of picture The phone now feels dated. There is no fingerprint sensor, no NFC (thus you cannot use it as your bank card), the screen is nigh-impossible to see (even on full brightness) when outside on a sunny day With that said, however, I will be recommending OnePlus phones for anyone that wants to buy a more higher-end device (sadly, they do not make affordable phones anymore). The fact I was able to use this as my daily phone for over 5 years is quite amazing and has definitely paid itself off many times over. I bought it for 290 EUR. That is 0.14 EUR / daily (I've had it for roughly 1940 days), which is definitely a fair price for the amount of daily use. (Anything over 0.2 EUR for the same time frame is a fucking scam) Sadly, as OnePlus has decided they will move towards the higher-end device market, I will not buy their products anymore. They are simply too expensive. (Especially when I know how much they paid for their hardware) My next phone is going to be a Google Pixel 3a. I hope it will last as long if not more! (Though 5G might kill it sooner) Edit: Oh and don't worry. I do not plan on throwing it away. I will likely re-solder the 3.5mm jack and keep using this phone as an mp3 player... or I'll gut it and get the modem out to give it new life as a tracker. Dunno yet.
  4. Google Pixel phones

I am planning on getting a Google Pixel 3a. Hopefully it will last me for at least 4.5 years (the same that my OnePlus 1 lasted for) I will keep you guys updated. Edit (08/11/2020): I now have the phone for about a week, the design is very neat, the camera is good (mind you, I rarely ever take photos), the microphone/speakers are _very_ good and the display is great. Connectivity hasn't been an issue at all. Overall, a good design from Google.
  5. What parts do you currently have and why do you want to switch to another build? What are you going to do with your build? Is it going to be used for gaming exclusively? (Not counting the ordinary tasks you would expect to do on your computer) What kind of peripherals do you currently have? What is your current internet speed? (And what can you likely get in the next 3-4 years) What is your requirements for storage? Intel or AMD?
  6. I will use my old OnePlus One until I cannot fix it myself anymore, which is fairly unlikely as there are plenty of donor phones sold for scrap (10-50 USD). Buying a new phone is incredibly expensive and it is not really required after decently sized phones turned up in the market. The only issue might be failing flash storage due to immense write counts, though I do believe they can be re-soldered onto the board.
  7. From the looks of things, small businesses in the US are going to get shafted (as usual):
  8. I've been working from my car for the past few weeks. After I got an inverter (12V -> 230V) I can easily work where-ever as long I have a working GSM connection and don't have to take a shit. Frankly, it's quite refreshing though I do get the occasional stink look whilst I am sitting in my car with 4 antennas popping out of it and several laptops. I haven't the slightest clue why. Apparently some companies took this quite hard. Lots of small businesses my friends worked at are basically bankrupt. I am unsure how any smaller restaurant chain is going to live through this as there's been a quarantine for close to 2 months now and it's not like they can choose not to pay rent. I know from personal experience that some companies get very dodgy when you start asking them about pay for your services. My friend in the UK (who works as a contractor) didn't get paid (he doesn't get paid monthly either, so this is quite an issue for him). Surprisingly, I've gotten more 'work for us remotely!' job offers than I ever had in the entire time-span that my LinkedIn account went public. I am fairly glad that I picked a fairly niche specialty and there's not a lot of people that end up going for this, so hopefully I'll remain "wanted" even if I do lose my current job.
  9. I can help with: C, Embedded Engineering, Microprocessors (mostly ARM though), Shell (Especially /bin/sh), Busybox, OpenWRT, Networking, Linux, Linux Kernel programming. I don't use Discord, though you can always write a message to me on these forums and I'll do my best to reply within a timely manner. I am always available from 7:00-15:00 GMT, as those are the times I actually work (remotely, of course), so I could probably help via Discord, though you would have to plan this a day or so before. Edit: Rereading this, this is unlikely to be what they teach at schools these days...
  10. A new headset

Sennheiser and Audio-Technica are great headphone makers.
  11. I think it goes without saying that you should research about a part a tad bit longer than it takes to read a single review. What I meant is that you should read reviews regardless of what manufacturer you buy from as from time to time they often release defective product lines. Now, in regards to the 80+ ranking, it doesn't rank reliability what-so-ever and you might have bad parts included in it regardless of how efficient it is at converting AC -> DC. Mind you, you are far more likely to get a bad product who hasn't been certified or has been certified to a low 80+ ranking, though it's not exactly what you should be looking for. You should look for 'FCC certification', 'CE certification', 'CCC certification', 'EAC certification', 'TUV certifaction', 'RCM certification'. These mean that the product has been certified in (in order) USA, Europe, China, Russia, Germany and Australia. There's more markings on the packaging that you should know, but I'll leave you to figure them out. (The knowledge will stick better that way). The person who told me the WD HDD's are complete shite is a infrastructure admin for a fairly big company, thus it is fair to say he's had a fair bit of experience. Note, that it doesn't mean that if you buy or have a WD HDD it's going to fail on you - they're simply more likely to. I've had a Macbook Pro of the same line that has caused a lot of problems to others, though it's been running fine for me these past 4 years. Shit happens. Heh... Don't put stuff on the internet you don't want others to see... though most people aren't going to be hiding secrets stored away in their HDD's. At best you'll find nudes. Another fairly convenient advantage of cloud storage is that you're able to access the information without the need to physically connect the drive to your computer... It's quite helpful if you travel a lot. In the end it's all up to personal preference... for example, I don't see a need for an HDD in the first place as 500GB of SDD storage is more than enough for me.
  12. The '80 PLUS' certification and it's levels (none/white, bronze, silver, gold, platinum, titanium) do not describe whether your PSU is more or less susceptible to fucking up your motherboard, rather, they describe the efficiency of the conversion from AC to DC power. It is a better idea to trust established PSU providers that you have listed below, rather than rely on the '80 Plus' certification. Reading reviews for a specific model is, in my opinion, the most key aspect when buying them as even established providers release defective PSU's. I concur for the 850 EVO SATA option, though I can not think of a realistic reason why you would want to go for a 950 EVO versus the newer (and cheaper) 970 EVO. You should avoid Western Digital like the plague. A friend of mine has a graveyard full of them. The only good HDD's you can buy from WD are the ones that are made by HGST and sold under the WD brand, or as you've mentioned, just go for products with the HGST brand. Though I might be a tad biased. In general, I see no real reason to even consider HDD storage in this day and age. (Unless you want to run your own server) SSD's aren't all that expensive (especially when we are talking about secondary storage options) and quite frankly, cloud storage is simply more reliable. I believe 2 TB of storage from Google costs some ~10 USD per month. (OneDrive and DropBox have similar prices).
  13. Upgrading my PC

That's true, though upgrading to 32GB of RAM later on would be a little bit awkward, imo. Though I'd guess for most uses that's fairly far fetched as 16GB for a gaming computer would do just fine. For my own personal computer I went with 1x16GB and later bought another 16G stick, though I do use some software that's fairly RAM intensive and have a few VM's running due to work.
  14. Upgrading my PC

Is there any reason why you would go for 2x8 GB instead of 1x16 GB RAM? I would avoid Western Digital like the plague. For a comparably small amount more you can get a 'Samsung 860 Evo 500GB' or a 'Samsung 970 Evo Plus 250GB'. What are you going to do with the computer? Are you sure you actually need a Ryzen 7 instead of a 5? Also, any reason why you picked the 'MAX' version over the regular one when you're not getting an NGFF (M.2) storage device?
  15. OnePlus products

This is effectively impossible without significant and consistent use of the phone during those 3 hours. It was most likely a software issue, causing something to keep running whilst the phone was off. The hardware should be fine. If you want to keep using the phone, maybe donate or give it away to someone (as it's still quite a solid phone), I would suggest installing a TWRP recovery, Lineage OS and a 'pico' installation of GApps, instead of the full suite which drains the battery quite significantly. GApps - https://opengapps.org/ Lineage OS - https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/pme TWRP - https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-twrp/ With the above setup in addition to using DuckDuckGo as a browser, Messenger Lite (instead of the plain Messenger app) and no standalone Facebook application, my phone can easily last me the entire day or at least half a day if I constantly listen to music. And my phone is easily over 5 years old at this point. In other words, the battery itself is fine. It's very likely you're still sporting an old Android distribution, or the applications you use significantly drain the battery. There's been no other issues with the phone at all. Anything that popped up was basically fixed by cleanly reinstalling the distribution. Though I would likely never buy another OnePlus product as they're overpriced to all hell. A Xiaomi MI would be a much better choice cost/value vise.
